Zing, vecht, huil, bid, lach, werk en bewonder (Sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work, and admire, 2024), a unique film created by artist Sophia Al-Maria during her residency at the former studio of Piet Mondrian in Laren, The Netherlands. The film, produced as part of Al-Maria’s receipt of The Mondrian Prize 2023, brings together an incredible group of artists, including Tia Campbell, Joshua Fay, Sin Wai Kin, Shuang Li, Ruoru Mou, Lydia Ourahmane, Martine Syms, Ryan Trecartin, and Josh Woolford, to collaborate in an innovative way. Using the method of the ‘exquisite corpse’, a surrealist game where each contributor adds to a collective creation without seeing the previous parts, these artists each contributed their own segment to the film. Kadeem Oak then masterfully edited these pieces into a cohesive whole. The project is a modern reinterpretation of the surrealist tradition, blending various voices, styles, and mediums, enhanced by field recordings made by Kelsey Lu in Laren and a host of guest appearances, both human and non-human, from different moments in time. The title of the film is inspired by the iconic song by Egyptian-Dutch singer Ramses Shaffy, and its creation celebrates the spirit of artistic collaboration and sharing of time and space.
